BROEK

BETTER

STATEMENT

“The day after my birthday, I was in my first car crash. My car was totaled, I fractured my collar bone and pelvis and had surgery for both, and will be recovering for some time. Good news is I am alive, and minus the fractures, in ok shape and I have an excellent medical team and support. Health and support is so crucial for us all and I am so grateful for the loved ones who show up for me and appreciate the support.”

FAQs

  • Broek was making a blind exit out of the end of her driveway onto a street and was T-boned by another car.

  • Broek sustained the following injuries:

    • Closed displaced fracture of shaft of left clavicle.

    • Closed fracture of both acetabula

    • Closed minimally displaced zone 1 fracture of sacrum

    • Brachial Plexus

So she had two surgeries: one for clavicle one for pelvis.

Currently she is out of the hospital and has her left arm in a sling and walks with a cane.

Update 7/1/25: Stitches and staples from surgery procedures have been removed.

  • Broek has PT and OT for the next 2-3 months to build up strength and full movement. Walking is just a bit slower and it “feels like falling on your butt skating”.

Full recovery is about 6 months to a year.

  • A couple things!

    1) Broek would love to say hello and catch up, and visits are welcome. That being said, between doctors appointments, medical phone calls, and general overall exhaustion, text and email tends to best in order to coordinate a time to catch up further. over phone or IRL. Outreach and connection is welcome, appreciated, and a part of recovery.

    2) Beyond that, there are a number of evolving needs as recovery takes place over time. For those specific needs, see the ‘Contribute to Recovery’ section on this page. There is a definite ongoing need for day-to-day support as well as goods/services.
